Ayurveda tips for dealing with Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it difficult to fall asleep, difficult to sleep longer, and unable to sleep again. Lack of sleep for an extended period can result in serious health problems, and a lower quality of life, which is why addressing this problem is essential.

In Ayurveda, insomnia is categorized as a Vata disorder. Vata is associated with wind, movement, change, instability, cold, dryness, and light. To heal this ailment, one needs to practice the opposite: stillness, stability, groundedness, and warmth.

So how can you do that? Let’s have a look.

A sleep schedule

Try to go to bed early to have enough time to sleep all night. The following day, get up early. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., your mind is stable, slow, and dull. This is an excellent time to sleep well.

Long daytime sleep can disrupt nighttime sleep. Limit naps to one hour or less and avoid napping late in the day.

Tip: Make a habit of the wonderful morning routine, like going for a run, having a refreshing breakfast, and embracing the morning vibe. Once you enjoy this, it will compel you to stick to your schedule.

Eat well

It is advised that you eat your dinner between 6.30 and 7 p.m. After sunset, the digestive fire begins to cool. Eating light food at the end of the day can help your digestion. The last meal significantly affects your sleep quality. It is advised to avoid things while eating, such as reading books, watching television, or engaging in conversations.

Tip: Try having organic foods such as fruits and veggies. Avoid fast food as it is harmful to digestion and can disrupt your sleep.

Unplug & Unwind

Your overall well-being and health depend heavily on the interplay of your mind, body, and soul. You must avoid negative energy and strive to be in a positive atmosphere. You should be cautious about what and who you talk to before bed. Turn off your phone, computer, television, and social media two hours before bed.

Tip: Instead of spending time on digital things, spend time on things you can feel. Read a book, go for an evening stroll, and spend time with family. It’s healthy to have a habit of playing sports post dinner like badminton.

Abhyanga

A traditional Ayurvedic oil massage. This daily practice will transform your life.

This is an Ayurvedic practice where a massage therapist massages the whole body with warm oil. This releases muscle stiffness enhances skin, increases energy, releases stress, and the list of benefits goes on.

Warm up some sesame oil in a baby bottle and massage it into your body, working your way up from the extremities to your heart. Allow 10-20 minutes for this oil to absorb the skin before a warm shower or bath. Ladies, avoid doing this during your menstruation.

Tip: One can do it over the weekend after a shower. This will release all the stress over the week and energize you with positivity.

Breathe

Seems silly? Well, this works. Deep, abdominal breaths are fantastic, but one of the best pranayama practices – is Nadi Shodhana, alternate nostril breathing. It is considered the king of pranayama practices. One should do it every night as your sleep depends on it.

Tip: Start observing your breath when you are sitting idle. Some people find it difficult to find their breath. It is advised to use earplugs.

Don’t ignore these simple habits. At the same time, uncover deeper disturbances in your life – at work, in relationships, unresolved emotions, or trauma.
